Benefits of double glazed windows

As well as the aesthetic advantages that come with opting for uPVC, timber, or aluminium double glazed windows, there are a number of reasons why choosing double glazing is a no-brainer. These include:

  • Improved thermal regulation and solar control
  • Improved sound and draft proofing
  • Upgrading to maintenance-free products
  • Upgrading your home security
  • Reducing double glazed condensation
  • Changing the colour and style of existing windows

Thermal regulation and solar control

Adding a coating to one surface of the glass offers a better thermal performance (customarily seen as a “C” energy rated window). Once argon gas and warm edge spacer bars are applied, the “A” or “A++” energy rating can start to be achieved.

Sound or draft proofing

Double glazed windows achieve superior sound and draft proofing by combining 4mm and 6.4mm panes of glass. Draft proofing is achieves by a compression of gaskets, and our branded hinges and locking system are adjustable to keep your windows free for many years to come.

Upgraded home security and safety

By utilising laminated glass in the double glazing process, the glass in a window remains together rather than shattering into small shards. This lowers the risk of injury if a window is accidentally broken in your home, and also keeps intruders out with ease. All new build projects are fitted with double glazing as standard, and the security benefits will help to lower the cost of your home insurance.

Reduced condensation

While double glazed windows won’t eliminate condensation entirely, the inner pane of glass is warmed by the temperature of your property – keeping the transfer of moisture from the outside world to a minimum.

Double Glazing FAQs

How do double glazed windows work?

Double glazed windows work by positioning two independent panels of glass within the frame, separated by a gap that is often filled with insulating gases like argon. This structure prevents a barrier against heat transfer; making them far more energy efficient than single-pane windows.

How long do double glazed windows last?

The life expectancy of your double glazed windows can depend on the type of material used. Our timber windows are made using premium Accoya wood, which typically lasts upward of 60 years. Aluminium windows, meanwhile, have an average life expectancy of 45 years before they need to be replaced. uPVC windows typically last 30 years, but the materials can be recycled and replaced up to 10 times, meaning your windows could theoretically be around for 350 years!

How do you get rid of condensation inside double glazing?

Condensation can be an ongoing fight within your home, especially if you have older windows and haven’t yet made the switch over to double glazing. There are a number of ways to reduce condensation on windows, including improving ventilation, warming unused rooms, or upgrading your windows entirely. If your double glazed windows have blown entirely, it may be time to replace them with an improved alternative.
